Nuits Irvington-on-Hudson, New York
Historically hailed as the most elegant villas on the Hudson, this magnificent Pre-Civil War mansion has been fully restored to its original splendor and updated for today.
Nuits, a 14,000 square foot gem, is centrally sited on a magnificent 4.78-acre setting overlooking the Hudson River. While re-engineered to state-of-the-art standards, original and magnificent architectural features create breath-taking effects. Ceilings rise 14 feet on the first floor and 12 feet on the second. Piazzas surround the home, offering outdoor access from nearly all major rooms while several balconies enhance the second level.

The History
Designed by renowned European architect Detlef Lienau, Nuits was constructed in 1853 as the country home of French importer Francis Cottenet. Nuits, named after Cottenet’s birthplace of Nuits St. Georges in France, is constructed of buff limestone that was quarried in Caen. Amazing architectural details include intricate plaster moldings, Chestnut paneling, nine fireplaces, some of which have windows directly above their mantles, and intricate carvings.
Through out it’s 155-year history, Nuits has been owned by such notable figures as Cyrus Field, who laid the first Atlantic cable; John Jacob Astor III; Amzi Barber, the “Asphalt King”; and Chauncey Depew. Because of its architectural magnificence and outstanding ground, Nuits was chosen to represent the Newport mansions of New York City’s elite in the feature film, “The Age of Innocence.” Nuits was registered with the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1980.

The Property
Nuits rests atop nearly five park-like acres that offer outstanding Hudson River views. There is a 1,550 square foot caretaker’s cottage and a two-car garage. A handsome in-ground pool graces the back of the home and is surrounded by specimen shrubs and arbors covered with flowering vines.
The property features hundreds of specimen trees and shrubs which, according to the New York Botanical Garden, are among the oldest and finest to be found in the lower Hudson River Valley. The property is within walking distance of the Ardsley-on-Hudson train station, and an easy 38- minute commute to Manhattan.
